Leaving Toronto, Arriving in KL (April 30-May 2nd)

Hello friends and family,

This summer I am lucky to be spending one month in Malaysia and Indonesia; and three months in Bilbao, Spain. I've never set foot in any of these countries, but for the next month I have my girlfriend, Zoë, and her family to guide me to and fro. 
Este verano tengo suerte de poder pasar un mes en Malasia e Indonesia; y luego tres meses en Bilbao, España. Nunca he visitado ninguno de estos países, pero por el proximo mes tendré mi pareja, Zoë, y su familia para guiarme. 



Before I get to our itinerary, you will have likely noticed that I am translating my blog posts into Spanish in order to practice my writing and build my vocabulary before I arrive in Spain on June 1st. I will attach a Spanish paragraph right after the English one, and I'm liking the color purple for the text.
Antes de hablar de nuestra agenda, habrás notado que traduzco mis posts del inglés al español para practicar mi escritura y aumentar mi vocabulario antes de mi llegada a España el 1 de junio. Voy a pegar un párrafo en español después del inglés, y me gusta el color violeta para el texto. 


At the end of the last semester I subletted my room in Toronto and packed up my belongings for the big trip. I have an internship waiting for me in Spain, and I'll spend the month of May seeing Malaysia and Indonesia with Zoë. It was a good school year, and I have just one more fall semester before I graduate in December with a degree in political science, economics, and Spanish. 
Al fin de semestre yo alquilé mi habitación en Toronto y hice mi maleta para el grand viaje. Haré una práctica en España, y pasaré el mes de mayo viajando por Malasia y Indonesia con Zoë. Fue un buen año, y me queda un semestre antes de graduarme de mi programa en ciencias políticas, economía y español.

At 9am, Zoë and I left Toronto on April 30th for a 26 hours of travel. She is always good to fly with. 
A las nueve, nos fuimos de Toronto el 30 de abril por un viaje de 26 horas. Zoë es siempre una buena compañero de vuelo. 


19 hours later we saw the Japanese coast and settled in for a 2 hour lay over and noodles. 
19 horas después vimos el coste de Japón y nos acomodamos para un descanso de 2 horas, ¡y la sopa!



After the odyssey we made it to Kuala Lumpur where Zoë grew up until she was 17. The average temperature in this city is 80º and frequently higher!
Al fin de todo: Kuala Lumpur dónde Zoë nació y ella creció hasta de edad 17. El tiempo medio en la ciudad es 25ºC. 





On our first day we went to the ultimate for authentic eating--Ikea. KL seems to be covered in malls, and we went into several while doing errands. But, each of these buildings offers air conditioning to temporary stave off the heat outside. 
El primer día fuimos al mejor lugar de comida auténtica: Ikea. KL parecía lleno de centros comerciales, y entramos en unos cuantos mientras hacíamos nuestros recados. Pero, hay AC en cada edificio para combatir el calor exterior.



That night we ate a spicy meal in Little India (Brickfields) including an almond drink. I adapted well to the jet lag despite the 12 hour time difference. 
Esa noche comimos platos picantes en el barrio indio, incluida una bebida de almendras. Me adapté bien sin sentir jet lag. El cambio fue de 12 horas entre husos horarios.



So here I am in KL with Zoë and her parents. We have lots of activities planned, and I'll try my best to keep you up to date on my travels this summer on this blog and through my radio show, Tracks From Abroad, which releases a new episode every Monday at 6pm on CIUT 89.5 FM. 
Así que estoy aquí en KL con Zoë y sus padres. Tenemos ganas hacer muchas cosas, e intentaré escribir y hacer fotos para manteneros al día del viaje este verano. También podéis seguirme en mi programa de radio, Tracks From Abroad, que emite nuevos episodios los lunes a las seis en punto en CIUT 89.5 FM.

We stayed busy after arriving in Kuala Lumpur!  ¡Nos mantuvimos ocupados tras llegar a Kuala Lumpur! The city is a maze of elevated concrete highways, and so on the first day we left home and merged into traffic heading towards Malaysia's National Museum. There are lots of small motorcycles which split lanes, cutting through traffic, and the cars are different shapes and sizes, stamped with unusual brands. A group of police trainees throttled past us all on their own motorcycle/scooter.  Hay carreteras elevadas de concreto por todo la ciudad, así que cuando salimos de la casa conducimos por coche y partimos hasta el museo national de Malasia. A Marvelous Day at Ojos del Diablo

I recently had a fabulous day hiking in Cantabria, Spain, a short bus ride away from where I've been living in Bilbao.  I joined a website called Workaway  earlier this summer where you can meet fellow travelers and get advice. Through the site, I heard from a local that the mountain Pico Candina near Laredo in the Cantabria region was a fantastic hike. It's colloquially known as the Devils Eyes, and a beautiful beach down below waits for hikers after they summit. That is where I went by myself a few days ago, and it was the most beautiful place I've seen in Spain.  This is the rock formation which gave the hike its name. I walked right past it on my way to the summit, but I did admire the rocks from down below on the beach. I bet at certain times with the sun shining through it looks outstanding.  With a car it would have been easy to get to this beach, but I had to take the bus. Flavors of Malaysia

Written by Zoë and  Translated by Jesse Over the month of May my family introduced Jesse to a spread of Malaysian dishes. Some were local foods, some western favorites, and others were more peculiar which Jesse was brave and curious enough to try. These include the  Durian (the most pungent of fruits) and chicken feet (which speaks for itself). Durante el mes de mayo mi familia presentó muchos platos de Malasia a Jesse. Unos eran locales, o occidentales, y unos eran más peculiar. Jesse tuvo el valor y la curiosidad de probarlos probarlos. Entre ellos estaban el Durian (el más acre de las frutas) y los pies del pollo (que hablan por sí mismo). An interesting fact about Malaysian street food is that stands open as early as 6 a.m. and close as late as 4 in the morning.
